Eric Drummond Smith Show Opening Meet the Artist
October 5 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
The show is entitled Theogony – – – here is part of the artist’s statement: “This show was conceived as a book, an autobiography in fifty different black and white painted drawings. Each, I hope, can stand alone, but each is part of a discourse with one-another. All were drawn with the same black acrylic ink and the same small acrylic fiber brush on pieces of the same white paper. Each piece was conceived and drawn on the same table in my small apartment over two months. The show is named after Hesiod’s Theogony, written almost 3000 years ago. The original is a genealogy of gods and monsters, a poem outlining the origins of the Greek supernatural world, a tale of warring gods and emergent virtues and vices. My work is more simple – I explore iconography I’ve used in the past, the unfolding of myself, in images and ideas, mingling high and low culture like fine champagne and ballpark chili, hopefully to good effect. The tale isn’t linear or clear, though. It is vague and spotty, glimpses from odd angles.”
